In recent years, there has been some debate as to whether Christians can observe Halloween. While the debate continues, here are some easy ways to have a costume party but still remain true to one’s faith.
Many groups have switched from scary Halloween events to harvest festivals. Dress up as favorite animals or foods. A scarecrow or a pumpkin is an excellent harvest festival costume anyone can use. Wear overalls and a straw hat and be a farmer. There are plenty of easy costume ideas.
Other groups have switched to hero or friendship parties. People can come dressed as their favorite Bible or Christian hero, such as St. Joan of Arc or St. Francis of Assisi. Small children might enjoy a friendship party in which they can dress up as a favorite bedtime friend, such as Winnie the Pooh, or some other wholesome, non-threatening character.
Another great idea for kids is a career party. Have them dress as they would like to be when they grow up. Astronauts, teachers, police or fire personnel are all fun ideas that any kid would enjoy.
Little girls who enjoy dressing as a princess could dress up as Queen Esther from the Bible or as St. Elizabeth, a princess who is honored as a Catholic saint.
For those people to whom the season is not complete without a scary costume: Many people believe that Halloween observances were a way to mock evil spirits. So there are some historical grounds for ghouls and goblins.
People who are interested in science fiction can look to the future and dress how they imagine they would in the far-distant future.
These are easy ways to incorporate Halloween without the scary elements that bother many people. It is possible to have dress-up fun and still keep the faith.
Choosing a Halloween costume is a fun but tricky business. Here are some tips to help pick the best costume
First of all, where will the costume be worn? Is it strictly for two hours of trick-or-treating? Or is there one or more costume parties planned? A pre-school teacher would be wise to invest in a costume that can be worn to classroom parties for years to come while a toddler’s parents should remember the costume will be outgrown by next year.
If the costume is for trick-or-treating, make sure the wearer’s mouth and eyes are fully visible. There should also be reflective tape and bright colors so that the wearer will be easily visible in the dark. Bring along a flashlight too.
If the costume will be worn outside, make sure it is warm enough for cool autumn nights. Allow enough room underneath for additional clothing.
If the costume is to be worn at a party, make sure it is comfortable to wear in a hot, crowded space.
No matter where the costume is worn, it should be easy for the wearer to walk, sit and stand. Bulky parts of a costume should be easy to remove for bathroom breaks, dancing and games.
Budget is always an important consideration. Investing in a high-quality costume is a great idea if it is purchased with a view toward using the entire costume or its parts in future events.
Also consider other people attending the event. A bawdy or risqué costume may not be a good idea at workplace party attended by one’s boss or key client. Those of opposing political, religious or ethnic backgrounds may not appreciate a costume that is perceived as mocking those backgrounds.
Don’t worry; even with taking these factors into account, it is still easy to find fun Halloween costumes. The trick is narrowing down the choices to find the one that will be the best treat for everyone.
Cosplay and Anime have really started to take off in the US. It’s getting really mainstream. So much so that it’s not just for nerds (like me) any more. Case in point, our new Naruto Costume has just come into stock and I really want one. The only problem is that I would have to jump into a time machine to fit into it. Of course there is nothing wrong with being a kid at heart and that’s just what anime provides. A great escape into ninja kicking and amazing action.
Well everyone is going ga-ga this year of the new Indiana Jones movie Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Of course Harrison Ford reprises his roll as our favorite adventurer and Cate Blanchette plays an awesome Col. Dr. Irina Spalko. This would be a perfect couples costume idea for any Halloween party. Just for the snakes. Everyone knows Indy hates snakes.
So you may not have the 6 pack to be a Spartan, but you still want to defend Greece from the invading Persians this Halloween. Well we can help. We have a the officially licensed 300 Costume ready to ship to you right now. So with a couple clicks of your mouse you will be on your way to battle at the hot gates.
So it looks like Rose McGowan is going to be Red Sonja in the upcoming movie to be released in 2009. If you remember Brigitte Nielsen played the original along with Arnold back in 1985.
This begs the question of the day. Will Rose McGowan grow up to be as bat shit crazy as Brigitte is today? And is there a curse of Red Sonja? If Rose’s choice in men is any indication, she is well on her way.
I’m starting to get a complex about not getting to the movies yet to see Dark Knight. The Batman and Joker Costumes look awesome. Everyone says Heath is the man. Too bad he’s not around to enjoy it.
Hell yea. Mardi Gras is coming up once again so get your beads on. I’ve been to New Orleans twice and it was a blast. Have a good time this year and rip it up.
